Excitement abounded here today. If Santa was real and had landed in my backyard this morning, I still don’t think it would have been as exciting as seeing three guys show up to install all the blocks for the walkway.
Some of you are new to the blog, so you haven’t been around for the walkway fiasco that has literally lasted for well over a year.
I finally started hacking into it the morning that I found myself crawling along the walk on my hands and knees to smell for something dead beneath it.
I just couldn’t quite get enthusiastic about getting all these blocks into the ground. Insert a huge shout out here of another round of thank you to my friends who almost killed themselves helping me haul these blocks home. I can’t even believe I was even pondering going and picking these up myself. I overestimate my strength…by unfathomable measures.
I also grossly overestimated my circular saw skills, but my friend Danielle had my back. And, then, my hero dad came swooping in on one of the most miserable days of the summer to redo some electrical work and remove the framing because I thought I had about 2 weeks to get the new walk down before putting the house on the market.
And then I failed again to make forward progress. Ugh…sorry again, dad 🙁
So, all of that made this site this morning just 100% amazing.
Will, one of the writing center assistants, responded to my not so veiled inquiry at the beginning of the semester to see if he and any of his guy friends could come work on this walkway. He rallied the guys and came to evaluate the project. He was an amazing ringleader for the group. They got straight to work.
Note the safety goggles and swinging hammer. These guys were so thorough. The block was used and had some mortar still stuck to it. These guys chipped off the mortar so the blocks would sit tight to one another. That was definitely above and beyond my expectations.
Here are the blocks mid-point. The guys were so much smarter than I am. I was digging individual holes for the blocks, which made it super difficult to level them. They guys just dug a channel into the yard, laid the blocks and then packed the dirt back around them. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Will isn’t going to be able to bend his knees tomorrow since he was the leveler extraordinaire today — emphasis on extraordinaire because he did an amazing job.
Here the guys are at the very end of the day figuring out how to make a step that would take me safely from the bottom of the ramp onto the walkway in my heels. I know they were tired by this time, so I’m really appreciative of how they stuck with it and played with a few arrangements for the step.
And, here is the walkway finished!!!!! I just have to pick up another bag or two of grass seed mixture tomorrow, rake out the leftover dirt piles into a few low spots in the yard, and seed everything. (Oh, and put new decking on the ramp…but let’s not focus on that right now).
The guys did a great job getting the blocks set close together and level!!!!!
Ok, I didn’t hire the balloon.
However, I did think it a fitting way to end the day.
