Tuesday was World Nutella Day. If you missed it, it’s ok. I don’t think that the maker of nutella, who most likely thought up this brilliant marketing scheme, will mind if you pick an alternative celebration day.
So, in honor of this day, I made Nutella Lava Brownies. On a scale of tastebud happiness, 1 being gross and 10 being eat the entire pan in one sitting, I give these a 15.75.
It should come as no surprise that mixing nutella and brownies is a very, very good idea. And, that’s all this recipe requires — one box of brownie mix (with the standard ingredients required to make it) and some nutella. Might I suggest Pillsbury’s milk chocolate brownies? If you’ve never tried them, you’ve not yet enjoyed the heights of brownie goodness.
All you need to do to make this recipe is fill a muffin tin 1/2 to 2/3 full of brownie mix. Drop some nutella on top of that. Then, cover the nutella with more brownie mix. I made some full size muffins and some mini muffins. You’ll get about 12 full size or 24 minis out of one box of 13×9 size brownie mix. I switched to the mini pans once I thought about just how much brownie mix was going into each cup of the full size pan. It was hard to stop at eating just one mini though, so everything evens out in the end.
Some tips for making these:
- I opted not to use muffin tin liners and greased the pan instead. It was a little rough to get the brownies out in one piece, so I recommend either using liners or greasing and flouring the pan. Or, at least wait until the brownies have cooled a bit before trying to remove them from the pan. A mini flexible spatula turned out to be a big help.
- I’d also suggest not putting the nutella into the pans too far in advance of when you’re going to put the brownies in the oven. If you do, I think there is a good chance that the nutella will sink to the bottom of the brownie and either stick to the pan or make a gooey mess during consumption.
- Have friends ready to help you eat these unless you want to consume 53,000 calories of brownies. Did I mention that this mixture of nutella and brownie takes brownie to a whole new level of delight?
